1881
Chevron, a sister company of Texaco, has established roots in Hawaii since 1881, when our earliest predecessor, Pacific Coast Oil Company (PCO) made its first shipment of kerosene to the islands. Chevron has been an integral part of Hawaii’s commercial life ever since. As a result, we developed a shared history of growth and partnership while we supplied the islands’ needs for energy products over the next 135 years.
World War II
Our employees embraced the challenge of reliably and safely serving the islands’ consumers, who varied from sugar planters and pineapple growers to everyday motorists. We built facilities and hired more staff to accommodate our growing business and soon excelled as the state’s market leader. During World War II, when many of our employees were recruited to fight, we adapted our facilities to meet the needs of our armed forces. We realized quickly that to support Hawaii’s growth, the islands would be better served with an increased refining capacity. This led to the building of the Oahu refinery. Hundreds of islanders worked diligently to construct the facility, and hundreds of employees were hired to operate it efficiently and productively.
Postwar
The postwar period saw a boom in automobile travel on the islands, both by local residents and tourists, prompting us to acquire another small refinery in Honolulu. With the help of Kama’aina families and local business interests, we were able to create a major retail presence in the islands. In the decades to come, our personnel have remained major contributors to the economic and social interests of the state, priding themselves as reliable neighbors that serve Hawaii’s energy needs and give back to the communities in which they live, work and play. Island Energy intends to carry on this tradition of dedication, service, reliability and quality for the businesses and people of Hawaii.
